FRIEND PICK: CHICAGO BEARS

Elizabeth Singer gets the honor of being the first friend to write a guest editorial for this blog. Her comments on my Team Ticker article were a passionate, reasoned appeal for Chicago Bears Fandom. I have re-posted here with added illustrations and links.

THE DECISION 2013 - COMMENTS

Five years ago, I faced the same choice as you face now.

I had just finished my first season of fantasy football, but had no NFL team to call my own.

After some research, I decided on the Chicago Bears for the following reasons.

First, the Bears are one of the original NFL teams with a long and colorful history, both in terms of players (Halas, Payton, Ditka, Butkus, Sayers, Urlacher) and in terms of defining what we now know as football (I.e., the invention of the T formation).

"Your choice is easy, my friend"

Second, they're a tough team. They bleed. They break. They sweat in the snow without sleeves, and they do it all without hiding under a dome

Third, they are a team known for great defense in a league rapidly succumbing to pass-happy-offenses.

They also represent a gritty-yet-cultured American city, have a scary mascot, a fun fight song, and one of the best SNL skits in the history of the show (Da Bears!).

Your choice is easy, my friend. Grab a brewski, a polish sausage, and become a SuperFan! Bear Down, Chicago Bears!

Notes: see the Chicago Bears 1940 Championship game, the most lopsided victory in NFL history. (BEARS 73, REDSKINS 0)
